Spring Has Sprung!

Spring Has Sprung!

Published Monday, May 8, 2017

Our garden is blooming after heavy rains and lots of sunshine. Spring is in full swing, and summer is well on its way.

We’re excited for the season of growth ahead, and we’re preparing for summer camp. (Spots are filling, so register today!)

Our garden is always growing and changing, so stop in and take a stroll through our urban oasis!

Here’s what’s new at SEEDS this season:

CHICKS

Our little chicks are growing up so fast! Below, you can see them at just three days old. Now, six weeks later, they’re nearly ready to move into the outside world. We’ll be putting them in their own little hen house later this week. The SEEDS Chicken Brigade is as dedicated as ever to helping our chickens – young and old – thrive.

HILARY’S HIVE

Before her sendoff celebration, we dedicated our beehive to Hilary Nichols, our Garden Manager for the last five years. Now it shall be known as “Hilary’s Hive!”

VOLUNTEERING AT SEEDS

Volunteerism is always in season! We’ve welcomed many volunteers since the start of spring. Big thanks to the groups from Cisco and Burt’s Bees, and to Salesforce and Dude Solutions for helping us have an amazing Earth Day!

Individual volunteers also play an incredibly important role in our garden. Last week, volunteers Oksana Samarskiy and Annette Bodenheimer (pictured below) harvested collard greens and weeded.

“We are in between jobs right now and have the time to give back to the community,” said Oksansa, who is searching for work in the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Bodenheimer is interested in research as it relates to protein chemistry. (We’d like to give them a little boost. If you have any leads in these fields, shoot us an email (info@seedsnc.org), and we’ll put you in touch.)

Want to get your hands dirty? Sign up here to volunteer.

Thank you for being part of our community and for helping SEEDS grow!
