Meet Aaron & Felix!

Published Thursday, Jul 2, 2020

Last month SEEDS welcomed two new members to our staff! Aaron Williams is our new SAPLINGs Coordinator, responsible for the growth, development, and management of our middle school program. Felix Pittman is our new SEEDlings Coordinator in charge of our elementary programs, who will be taking over for Herb Thornton as he pursues new career opportunities. We are so ecstatic to welcome both Aaron and Felix to our team and for all that they have done working with SEEDS already in our summer camp programs. It’s never easy to join a team when everyone is working remotely and new virtual programs are being pioneered but they have taken it in stride and will be amazing role models and educators working with our students.

We asked Aaron and Felix a few questions so that you can get to know them better too. Please join us in welcoming them to the SEEDS team!

Aaron Williams

What is your role at SEEDS?

I am currently the SAPLINGs Coordinator at SEEDS. I am working to support the local food distribution efforts for our Saturday grocery bags. This summer I am one of the organizers for our virtual summer camp program, helping to lead our weekly lessons making lunch together, plant check-ins and the dance party.

What’s your favorite dish to cook and eat?

My favorite dish to eat is my grandmother’s Lasagna. If i am cooking I really like making an oven roasted chicken with saffron rice and oven baked sweet potatoes fries.

What do you love about working with students?

Students are creative, adventurous and will never cease to surprise you with some new way of seeing the world around you. I want to be in a position to inspire and empower the youth through food and working at SEEDS I believe will allow me to do just that, while also learning from them as well.

What are you excited about for the future of SEEDS?

I am excited about being able to build a stronger Durham community, by using growing food together and cooking as the medium to do that. I am super excited about my role as the SAPLINGs Coordinator and all of the creative ways we can build up the program for our middle school students in the future.

What do you like to do when you’re not at SEEDS?

I really enjoy reading books, taking scenic nature walks and cooking new cuisine in my kitchen with my roommate Alli.

What is your role at SEEDS?

I have a few roles at SEEDS – During the school year I am the SEEDlings Coordinator, and during the summer I help organize our summer camp! As SEEDlings Coordinator, I create engaging, fun, and informative activities and lessons for the SEEDlings, including gardening and cooking lessons, as well as touching on some social-emotional learning exercises.

What’s your favorite dish to cook and eat?

Well, I have been vegan for nine years and LOVE to cook. My current favorite dish to cook and eat is vegan chana masala.

What do you love about working with students?

I love working with students because they inspire me to continue being a lifelong learner. Their enthusiasm to learn new concepts, along with their resilience to keep trying, are what make this profession so rewarding.

What are you excited about for the future of SEEDS?

I’m excited to see SEEDS continue to grow and build using a pro-intersectional perspective on social justice issues. Our students’ diversity is an enormous strength and we have just as much to learn from them as they do from us (if not more).

What do you like to do when you’re not at SEEDS?

When I’m not at SEEDS I enjoy running, hiking, practicing yoga, knitting, and spending time with friends and family.
