Urban Earth is an educational program that teaches young people about the natural world through hands-on activities, observation, and exploration. The program is offered Monday through Friday at the SEEDS garden to children from school groups, community groups, or other organizations. An Urban Earth session typically involves 45 minutes of activity time and a 15 minute tour of the SEEDS garden. Groups also have the option to bring a snack or lunch and enjoy a picnic in the garden. There is a fee of $2 per child.
Groups can select one of several different Urban Earth sessions, including those described below.
In "The Original
Soil," students discover the ingredients of soil first hand
"Animals of the Garden" begins with a discussion of what animals can be found in our backyards – including reptiles, amphibians, insects, and mammals – and why they are important. Students can view some live examples of these animals.
"Plant for Food" covers the survival needs of plants, animals, and humans using a food chain chart, animal skulls, carnivorous plants, and a take-home activity.
"Youth Are What Youth Eat" (YAWYE) is also offered as a session. For more details about the Urban Earth program, or to request a session for your group, please contact Thad Bennett at 683-1197 or tbennett@seedsnc.org. |
