March Garden Journal

At SEEDS, spring hasn’t arrived all at once. It’s been unfolding in real time, and we’ve had a front row seat. One day it’s just a hint of green, the next it’s a burst of color, and suddenly the whole garden feels like it’s waking up and stretching after a long rest. There’s a kind of momentum building now, where every visit reveals something new pushing through, reaching up, or quietly taking hold.

Color is starting to take over in the best way. Tulips are opening up in bright, soft layers, and daffodils are scattered throughout the garden like little pockets of sunlight. The fruit trees are beginning to bloom too, covered in delicate blossoms that feel like a promise of what’s ahead. Nothing is fully there yet, but that’s part of what makes it exciting. It’s all in motion, all building toward something bigger.

What makes this time of year stand out is how uneven it is, in a good way. Some beds are already full and lively, while others are just beginning to wake up. It creates this patchwork across the garden where every corner feels a little different. You can’t rush through it without missing something. It asks you to slow down, look closer, and notice the small wins, like new leaves, first blooms, and that sudden pop of color you swear wasn’t there yesterday.

We’re also getting ready to welcome bees into the space, which feels like a big moment for the garden. With so many flowers coming in across the property, there’s going to be no shortage of food for them. You can already imagine how active everything will feel once they arrive, moving from bloom to bloom and tying the whole space together. It’s one more step toward making the garden not just something we grow in, but something that’s fully alive and working as a system.

Of course, spring hasn’t made it easy on us. The weather has been all over the place, with warm, sunny days followed by sudden drops in temperature that keep us guessing. But the plants don’t seem to mind as much as we do. They keep going. They adjust, they hold on, and they continue growing through it all.

There’s something grounding about that. The garden doesn’t wait for things to be perfect, it just keeps moving forward with whatever it’s given. Watching that play out day after day is a reminder that progress doesn’t have to be dramatic to be real. Sometimes it looks like steady, quiet growth that adds up over time.

Being out here right now feels different than any other point in the year. There’s a sense that things are shifting quickly, that we’re in that in between moment where everything is about to take off. The sounds are picking up, the colors are deepening, and the whole space feels more active with each passing day.

We’re right on the edge of the season really kicking in, and you can feel it. It won’t be long before the garden is full, busy, and overflowing, but for now, we’re appreciating this part, where everything is just getting started.
