April garden journal

As we move closer and closer to the full swing of summer, the SEEDS garden is buzzing with activity. The staff has been working hard each day to prepare the space, tending to garden beds, planting new crops, refreshing learning areas, and making sure every corner of the garden is ready for a busy and exciting season ahead.

One of the sweetest signs of the season has been the presence of chickadees in the garden. These small, energetic birds have quickly made themselves at home, and we’ve been loving the sound of their songs throughout the day. Chickadees are known for their distinctive calls and curious, friendly behavior, they often move quickly from branch to branch, exploring their surroundings and searching for food.

Beyond their charm, chickadees play an important role in the garden ecosystem. They feed on insects, larvae, and small pests, helping to naturally protect plants and maintain balance in the garden. They’re also known for their incredible memory, storing seeds in various locations and remembering where to find them later, which can even help with plant growth and seed dispersal.

Seeing and hearing them regularly is a great sign that the garden is a healthy and welcoming habitat. Birds like chickadees are drawn to spaces with plenty of plant diversity, shelter, and food sources, exactly what we strive to create here at SEEDS.

Alongside these exciting wildlife moments, we’re continuing to prepare for a full and vibrant summer. We’re getting ready to welcome back our DIG kids, as well as launch our newly announced summer camp. There’s so much happening behind the scenes, all with the goal of creating meaningful, hands-on experiences in the garden.

Every detail, from the plants we grow to the wildlife we support, is part of something bigger. The garden isn’t just a place to visit, it’s a living, growing ecosystem, and we’re so excited to share it with you this season.
